Pope FrancisBe joyful, know what religious poverty really is, and a bicycle just might be better for you than a car, Pope Francis told thousands of seminarians, novices and young people discerning their vocations July 6 at the Vatican in a celebration of the Year of Faith.

The Holy Father spoke off-the-cuff in a 45-minute talk about discerning one’s religious calling. It was a presentation that could help many vocation directors sharpen their focus on what’s essential.

Here are some of the important areas of the Holy Father’s talk:

  • Failure to commit
  • Joy
  • Pastoral Fruitfulness and Celibacy
  • Consistency and Authenticity
  • Religious poverty
  • Transparency with the Confessor
  • The four pillars of formation
  • Community Life
  • Do not speak ill of others
  • Two dimensions: Transcendence and the neighbor
  • A more missionary Church
